my ex was dirt poor when i first met her and later became an Oncologist, getting her MD from a very reputable medical school. A good chunk of her class were not rich or upper middle class.

But hten this is just deflecting from the fact that university under graduates, to PhD and including professional doctorates should all be free. But the point I was trying to make is that she wouldn't have been able to do it without school loans which she now pays off with her job.
