You mean the fight where Goku and Vegeta insisted on the 1v1 fights, the one where Vegeta turned himself over to Babidi and fought Goku and Goku didn't go ss3 and end the fight quickly? The one where he decided to train the boys in the fusion technique because he didn't feel like stepping up and killing Buu? Cause for every single time we can see Gohan fail it was because of a series of decisions other people made that forced Gohan into that failure into the first place. Nobody in that series takes anything seriously until mass extinction and planetary destruction are on the table, and they ignore a whole bunch of mitigating steps that could prevent all that.

And Gohan should have been prepared for something like that ever since his dad gave Cell a senzu bean.
