The stats your Arisen and Pawn each get upon level up are determined by their currently equipped vocation(class) at the time. The amount of stat points received also changes depending on that character's level range.

Don't let your Arisen or Pawn level up past Level 10 with the initial Mage vocation on them because the stat gains it gives past Level 10 are worse than the other vocations and it will result in your Arisen or Pawn being weaker stat wise in the end. So if you chose Mage for your Arisen or Pawn make sure you get to Gran Soren before then so you can upgrade to Sorceror if you still want to use a magic based class.
