Have a mage pawn (you could do sorcerer instead but they can't heal you). Having a healer is always handy, and by having your own pawn as one of those 2, you can choose what spells you want them to have instead of having to cycle through other players pawns trying to find the spell set up you want.

That is also great advice.

But you have left out that Anodyne (healing) magic only heals as far as the grey part of your life bar meaning that if you have taken a lot of damage you will still need curatives to get back to full health.

I would also suggest having a Mage Pawn with a Boon/Affinity as one of their moves.

I hate normal enchanted weapons as I prefer strength weapons (I play as a Fighter Arisen) but I love it when my hired Mage Pawn puts either fire, ice, electric or holly (she has all those) on to my Dragon's Dogma sword. It is great having the strength of my Dragon's Dogma sword and being able to set things on fire or freeze them with it and being able to destroy the little ghosts when I have Holly on it.

Here is another bit of advice for you. When you are near a rift stone go in and then go straight back out of it as doing so will give you a checkpoint save which is a lot better than manual saving on the save screen.
