That whole blow-up was weird as fuck, think it was tied to the weird inferiority complex Nintendo fans carry around. There was also outrage when Metroid Prime 2 scored lower than Halo 2, despite scoring literally 9.5 lmao I think it was twofold. One, because it was Zelda. Two, because it was the first "serious-looking" Zelda game on the Gamecube, after everyone was disappointed with Wind Waker's aesthetic when they had previously watched the 2001 Space World tech demo and assumed that that was what the next Zelda would look like.
