It depends on what you're cooking. For frozen food, your absolutely don't need oil. They'll cook just fine.

For fresh food though (like fresh cut potatoes), you can spray a little bit of oil onto the food. Please do not pour a bunch of oil into the basket. That is not how air fryers are intended to be used lol
