Honestly I think it's a "inner circle" kinda thing. Like if there was a bunch of people who were great friends and managed to keep in touch with each other over the years... It's probably those kinda people who set up such invitations in the first place.

My only guess is that they try to reach out to people who used to be part of their inner circle, especially the ones they haven't seen in over a decade

Not like that at all from my perspective. My senior year of high school was when Facebook was made public and really starting to get popular so it was mostly on here. Class President invited the 10 people they were still friends with and those 10 knew other people so they got invited then those know other people so even more invites and on and on. Ended up being like 500 people invited, of those maybe 85-90 showed up. The event ended up being held on thanksgiving weekend so pretty much everybody had the time off to go and they were in state anyway visiting family for the holiday so it want some Massive undertaking for people to show up.
