No, that's actually what NYC was like in the 70s.

Between that and Escape from New York, you get a pretty accurate view of what the city was like. It didn't really clean up until the 90s, around the time Times Square turned into Disneyland.

The Warriors are an allegory for the Greeks, trying to fight their way through strange lands and strange armies to get back home. It's also why the main guy in charge was named Cyrus (and why his death sets the plot in motion).
