I was outside at about 10pm in the dark, mostly sky gazing and interacting with the cats in the dark. When there was this awful noise followed by a series of events.

It was hard to see, but an owl (or other large bird, but prob an owl) attacked an adult blue jay. The blue jay was squalling as it was carried from the very back yard to the front yard into a tree. The cats homed in with 5-6 climbing the tree. The owl ditched the blue jay, and then Cinder grabbed the blue jay, carrying it back to the backyard still alive. Then 6 of the cats circled around waiting, as Cinder eventually killed and ate the entire thing minus a few feathers. The whole time Sofie was aggressively demanding pets.

Now I know why you can't find bits of the bird.
