This is a cool explanation. I do think it's still best, as much as possible, to try to make emulation a legitimate alternative for real speedrunning, since having original hardware and a good setup to stream it on is still a major undertaking for many people and can gatekeep people out, and it's only going to get more and more difficult to maintain the hardware that runs these old games, whereas emulation is forever. But, it'll require making sure that emulation and hardware are as close as possible. Obviously on some consoles it's really not there yet, and occasionally weird issues like this crop up.
I agree completely! As far as I'm aware, there aren't any NES/SNES games that straight up ban emulators anymore, which is great for the Retro speedrunning community as a whole. Putting a cost barrier in front of people to run those games is just asking for trouble, you can't ask someone to put up $150 minimum in addition to the cost of things like a capture card just so they can try to play a game fast.
