These things are the end all be all of tourist traps designed to cycle through 150+ million people per year. I think the conception that it's mostly Disney fans going to them is a relatively recent phenomenon, Disney's market strategy has been to make sure everyone in a rich country with disposable income is aware they can go to Disney World. Mickey, Mario, Pikachu, Sonic, etc. are literally things that were designed by international corporations for international appeal, and I'm pretty sure Mickey is still at the top. The other answers are pretty laughable.
