I think it's a mistake to assume that classic Americana doesn't have international appeal though. We know it does; there is plenty of media depicting retro American life that has been globally popular.

Just because something is entrenched in the culture of a specific country doesn't mean it is unable to have mass appeal worldwide. That type of thing hasn't stopped American cowboy films, Chinese wuxia stories, or British period pieces from being incredibly popular to people in vastly different regions of the world. Those settings sometimes are beloved all across the globe BECAUSE they depict something that is foreign to many audiences. In The United States Peanuts is enjoyed because the depiction of young children in an American suburb is nostalgic. Elsewhere it's likely that same setting is enjoyed because it gives a glimpse into what that life was like.
