I just have a nagging feeling that other filmmakers more versed in "genre" fare like Richard Donner and John Carpenter would be more enamored with the success of the MCU. you can just google "john carpenter on marvel movies" to find evidence that supports your point here, though "enamored" probably isn't quite right anyway, a lot of people like to say that people like coppola and scorsese are "jealous" or "elitist" or something. that's really not their issue. the issue is that the business of movies is shifting so that if you don't make a superhero movie / a franchise / a sequel then your movie is extremely unlikely to be successful, and they want to make sure that those types of movies still get made and still get shown in theaters. you cant just let the market / $$$ direct what gets produced and promoted. otherwise, the book market gets mired in YA fantasy /smut, movies get stuck in superhero hell, tv turns into all reality schlock and oh wait --- while you slept, the world changed ...
