Grabbing a knife and THREATENING death on the people who's behavior is THREATENING harm is escalation. This still leaves the ball in the aggressor's court. Unless you are actually prepared to take a fucking life, you are still bottoming this encounter. MAYBE they don't call your bluff and walk away, or MAYBE they do and attack anyways. YOU.DO.NOT.GIVE.THEM.THE.CHANCE. That's all there is to it. You do not escelate the encounter with gradually increased levels of threat and hope they back down before you do.
