it just has lower THD which is normally seen as a positive thing. high THD can color the sound somewhat. Just based on my dac which shows what part of the frequency response is being played the 5% and 1% THD 125 hz sine tone seem to bleed all the way into the mids (bit of volume up to 2 khz) while the lower THD (0.5% and lower) is more controlled and doesn't bleed that far (around 600 hz max).

I've never heard airpod max so i don't have an opinion on it being the best. THD is just an objective metric that can be used to compare to other headphones. A lot of stuff is subjective tho like tonality and comfort. Airpod max weighs 100 grams more than the Wh1000 series so I doubt id find it more comfy to wear for long periods of time. I have a couple of headphones that weigh 350 grams+ and i don't find them very comfy.
