Keep your distance from cars in front of you in parking lots by anticipating actions like this. It would be your own damn fault for following too closely if he did hit you.
I'm not just out here tailgating people in parking lots. He passed the spot and made no indication that he was going for it. So I turned my blinker on to go for the spot, only to see him backing up like he didn't even see me.

I mean... if you start backing up, even though there's a person right on your bumper, how is it not your fault? It would be another story if they rear end you right after you stop.
