Abe's policies and vision for the country is still being forwarded and is the agenda for the party. Kishida, Abe's successor and current prime minister, is his protege. Abe's economic policies during his tenure was a bit of a mixed bag too. I'm guessing that's where the discontent came from, plus Abe's strain of nationalism. Abe is kind of like Obama in Japan, a well respected ex-head of state who is still relevant in politics as a figurehead.
