Yeah a manifold cat is not something I'd recommend to a newbie. IIRC you have to get down to the heads and remove a few other things in the engine bay, like the AC condenser or your master cylinder or something to get easy access. I'd still say go with used cat, you could probably get it done for $800-1000 then? Do you know if your manifold is still good? Often when your manifold cat goes, that means your manifold cracked.

I'd still recommend sticking it out for another 10 years or so, but that is one of the more difficult things you'd need to do.
