I'd much rather be reading a headline about conservatives getting mad over Disney's first Black lesbian protagonist.
Why did we need this to be a Buzz Lightyear movie? We already had an animated series about the real Buzz Lightyear. If their goal was to make a movie about Buzz, why not do an adaptation of the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command with Mira Nova and Zurg? If the intent was to have a lesbian protagonist in a sci-fi setting, why not make her the star?
This would be like if somebody had a story about a lesbian ninja and called the movie Michelangelo. None of the other Ninja Turtles appear in the movie. Just him and his lesbian bestie -- with a cameo for her wife or girlfriend.
Having a Black lesbian supporting character is enough to isolate bigots, but not really enough to galvanize progressives behind her since she's not the real star. I hope Disney learns that lesson. But, sadly, their takeaway from this will be to keep everyone heterosexual and to minimize the roles of characters who aren't White or Asian.
