Even when you were outside the cities, like on the way to Rivet City, it was near the water. The inland was all cities or towns, not a lot of stuff like abandoned mineshafts or mountainsides to explore. FO4 more or less was just spotty location after spotty location, no towns to be concerned with besides Diamond City and Bunker Hill because they wanted you to build your own settlements. And a lot of the creatures were just the same ones from FO3. No Geckos or even unique variants like the Albino radscorpion and the like.
