My personal theory is the kids born at the tail end of the 70s and through the 80s were probably the first true "TV generation". The first generation of kids who would legitimately spend their time on Saturday morning just consuming TV media and being steeped in cynical marketing. So things like action figures and cartoons of the era are the things those kids cherished and what followed them into adulthood. It was the shift away from a childhood based around experiences to a childhood based on what you watched and consumed. By the 90s this mentality was in full swing but I'd say it really started getting traction in the 80s (probably due to the rise of cable access).
