Couldn't her "brother" (I forget his name, I really don't care) have told her that she misunderstood the assignment? She'd still get bullied but it seemed kinda shitty to not correct her and help her, they're in the same class. The drama in the roller rink could have been avoided if El didn't lie to her BF and I still don't understand why she even did that. Wasn't "friends don't lie" a thing for her/them? I've been okish about everything else. Could just be Will didn't know what she was doing her project on. Or maybe he did and didn't exactly want to correct her since she was still grieving for Hopper I imagine. Also the "friends don't lie" thing is something literally all of them break.
