It's mainly because nancy and Steve are both way more popular than Johnathan and honestly Johnathan always felt more like Nancy's sidekick where as Steve feels like he is on more equal footing with nancy

Also, it's reasonable to believe that it's not just the audience who's noticed the mountain of character growth Steve's gone through since Nancy dumped him. I don't mind / kinda like the Nancy / Steve subplot resurgence because, for once, it doesn't feel forced - he's genuinely a much better person than he used to be. The problem I do have with it is that it's symptomatic of the writers not knowing what to do with Jonathan anymore, and further leaving him out to dry.
