Boudin won a divided race with only a plurality, and then lost a recall where he needed majority support (without an opponent to campaign against) to survive. It sucks, and the the amount of money that was spent on ousting him is concerning, but I think there are unique structural factors at play here that aren't applicable to the country as a whole.
This isn't new.

Reminder that last year Republicans also wasted 260 million dollars of taxpayer money trying to recall Gavin Newsom one year before he was up for re-election, which everyone with two brain cells to rub together (i.e, "not republicans") told them was a fool's venture because Newsom was a wildly popular incumbent, and lo and behold he cruised through the recall election with about the same numbers as when he was elected.
