Yeah it's not really that weird when you think of what magitek is actually doing in Final Fantasy games. More often than not, it is either a lost civilization thing or being used by the antagonists for corruption and war. There's some notable exceptions (X inverts it - the antagonists cement rule by restricting technology) but here they're just setting up the "war is bad" motif as...war. Also wow cool summons.
