I have kidney failure(just got my transplant and doing well though). Since without working kidneys, your body cannot process and expell phosphorus (among other things) you have to take phosphorus binders every time you eat something. I switched to a rather effective one called Velphoro. It costs $4000 for a bottle without insurance. With 80% medical coverage it costs $800. I left my job in October and started a new job in December, thankfully my pills lasted until January and my new insurance kicked in. Also, dialysis is several thousand dollars PER WEEK without coverage. That's why at least everyone who needs it qualifies for Medicare.
