I bought a Lyre online - and it even has the notes engraved on it. I usually don't get much out of cheap instruments but the wood on this seems promising - I had an even cheaper violin that sounded ok (poor, but ok).

So, I go to tune the Lyre - and 3 of the strings snap ... and it's not even a matter of over-tuning (which I did, but hol'up), cuz I was still 4 notes SHORT!! The pegs have a very fine rotator so it takes about a full rotation to go up a half note (Ab to A for example) so I wasn't tuning too fast and the string snapped anyways

I think the most likely case is it had strings for the wrong instrument - like for a 10, 13 or 25 string lyre when this is a 19 string.

:/

On top of that, the lower strings which I did tune... ... don't sound good; this could be the box, but I think it's legit the wrong strings for this instrument.

That's sad because as a kid I had a music maker: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/6/3/3/AADnJsAADRI5.jpg

And it always sounded awesome despite being VERY cheaply made
