They hated each other until a literal cupid got them together. ~~Dean is dead.~~ Neither John nor Mary knew about the Men of Letters, much less set up shop in one of their bunkers. John would have no reason to believe there was anything funky about his dad's disappearance, he was under the impression that he walked out on their family. John was a marine, he should be able to fight someone without doing a slapstick routine. Their parents' past is not a mystery, we get a pretty full detail of their life after they met.
