I have a friend who's a cop and after speaking to him these past couple years...he needs to quit. The job is honestly radicalizing (not like white supremacist radicalization!) him in a way. The stress of the job combined with the perception that he has no one( management and society) backing him up, is leading him to some bad opinions regarding people and crime. Thankfully he is considering leaving, but I'm worried it's too late.

I'll agree that cops need more social and financial support so that we can hire and keep the best possible. And as much as I want to say to him "if you can't handle the criticism and the realities of the job, you shouldn't be a cop", I also know that's just not how most people operate.

Anyway, point is, I agree that good policing is a necessity and it can be very hard. It's also a public facing job and when cops fuck up, they shouldn't be isolated from criticism. They aren't going to get the same protections as other jobs do and in some cases, they actually get more protection than they should have.

But they also need to do much better. No one likes criticism when they do their jobs...but fuck, your job is important so yes, people should treat your job differently.
