For me, it was the combination of poor emotional regulation and having no healthy coping mechanisms. I liked the feeling of being intoxicated enough to ignore that I absolutely hated what I tasted those first few times, leading to an almost 14 year stint of loving the taste of it that ended with me cycling back to drinking the same cheap shit I hated at first because all I wanted to do was get drunk and that was the most cost-effective way to do so.

I don't deal in regret too much anymore but there have been many times, in both drunkenness and sobriety, that I wish I had just been like, "Fuck that's gross," and moved on.
