Joke aside, it really was a common enough thing up into the late 1800s for death toll reports to include some variety of "taken by dogs" (usually wild ones) to show up for kids 7 and below. Though "taken" likely meant in the sense that their life was taken, not that the child themself was dragged off into the woods.
