the dialogue in that film caught me by surprise the first time I watched it. lots of slurs

I wasn't surprised at Ajax being homophobic. It was in-keeping with his overly hostile personality and machismo. He's the "bad" one of the group. But I was surprised that the more mellow and relatable Rembrandt used anti-Japanese slurs when worrying about a possible ambush. The characters being bigoted is probably one of the more realistic aspects of the movie though.

The entire reason the film has a surrealistic tone to it is because the screenwriter thought it was unrealistic that gangs would be racially integrated. He wanted the Warriors to be an all Black gang and when the studio said no to that, he created a stylistic fantasy world where gangs have larger than life identities like the Baseball Furies or the Punks (roller skate gang).
