Completely. Fucking. Irrelevant. In no other situation would you be advocating not charging someone for their gross negligence that lead to someone's death because "they already feel bad," because "he learned his lesson this time," or because "throwing him in jail won't bring the kid back." Gun culture in this country is a problem, and one of the absolute first steps to fixing it is requiring, under penalty of law, that people properly secure their firearms. We shouldn't need to enshrine common sense into law, but here we are.
