Iraq and Afghanistan were long term disasters for the US. Afghanistan basically destroyed the Soviet Union. And both of those occupations were after takeovers that ended almost instantly. And this is a country that is bigger, more technologically advanced, and has a stronger sense of national identity. Any occupation is likely to be ten times worse than Iraq or Afghanistan.

On top of that, Ukraine preventing the Russian army from taking over looks less and less impossible every day.
again: DarkRoast has claimed otherwise (though hasn't substantiated it), but I don't think we actually know what Putin's goals are. it's not at all clear (to me at least) that takeover and occupation is even something he intends on doing. it is therefore not super clear (to me) what "winning" this war means for either side
