I'm genuinely curious if Disney actually created the child-friendly version thing or if they based their works on child-friendly versions that already existed. Given the era, with the Hays Code and whatnot, it's possible they didn't know of darker versions, or if they did, they understandably didn't want to draw any ire or punishment from big names at the time.
