If it wasn't got Goku then Gohan and everyone on earth along with Chi Chi would be dead. Without Goku heroic sacrifice against Cell, there would be no earth and no Gohan and Chi Chi alive. Goku never stopped Gohan from studying, therefore he isn't a bad parent.
