So as I'm trying to figure this game out, I have some questions:
1. Armor. There's a lot of numbers and stuff, but it seems like most armor of the same class (light, medium heavy) are roughly similar? Meaning, it seems like it's not the most important thing to try and find optimal armor. Is this correct?
2. Are there any early enemy drops (weapons and shields in particular) that I should be looking out for?
I started as prisoner with the hopes of doing spellcasting but right now I'm mostly just melee fighting because I haven't found any new spells yet.

Soldiers in the first zone drop the brass shield. It is the best shield in the entire game. Some greatshields offer better protection and blocking, but they're heavy and not compatible with most builds. An excellent medium shield is always the best shield in these games, and unlike Dark Souls, you can get your within the first area. Look for the guys literally wearing a shiny brass shield.

You can get a high level staff early on by opening a teleoprter chest and running to its location. don't fight anyhting in the zone you get ported to.

You can run AROUND the castle with the first boss and into the zone behind it, and up to the area with another boss and avoid enemies and find the sword of night and flame...extremely strong weapon. The same area that ports you to fiond the staff, has emeies who drop a great armor set and some decent weapons but good luck farming them at starting out level.

The gate camp has a greatsword in a chest on the wagon close to the site of grace/rbonfire/rest point, as well as a flail on the opposite end(where you first approach from). Also the area map is right in the center of the camp. Any area you enter will have an obelisk icon on the map, the only visible icon. Usually along the road, this is the map that will reveal the zone layout.

Ruins to the north east of the starting zone next to the road with a bunch of flower enemies, there is a chest with a meteorite sword. It's a katana.
