Its battle royale fps aspect just feels great. you're thrown in with 100 players but matches don't go on forever. it really appeals to the CoD audience that has been abandoned with shitty current CoD games, in the sense that you feel like a "badass" when you do great, so the popularity doesn't surprise me.
