Sex and gender are not the same thing though. Sex is a biological distinction. Gender is a loose way of attempting to categorise people as they appear and behave. Race has a similar problem, because scientists generally feel that trying to pidgeonhole the enormously large wealth of genetic diversity into just a few blurry categories is unhelpful. This is why people say it's a social construct, because being "black" has far more social meaning than biological meaning.
