For long term maintenance yes, but science supports the benefits of fasting as well.

There are also entire ranges of lower calorie meal replacement shakes that will give you similar weight loss benefits without the starvation part. Ive seen a guy go from 220lb to 180lb in like two or three weeks on a water diet only to blow back out to 220+
