I think in those star trek wars movies they always explain the language thing as everyone having an in-built "universal translator" that makes them understand everybody.

But yeah that's another point. An entire huge planet the size of earth that all speak one language... if the british empire weren't able to achieve that on earth, doubtful any of the other planets could.

I dunno, if a planet reaches near total globalization (which isn't outside the realm of possibility) then I don't see it being odd for their entire race to know a lingua franca. There could still be regional languages.
