It's a natural, rational human fear of the unknown, in that it is the ultimate unknown. And it's uncontrollable. No one sits down and says "I'm in the mood to be afraid of this today." It's a form of anxiety, which has a habit of coming up at the most inopportune times. Anyone saying they're not bothered by the prospect of never again having a thought for the rest of eternity is either so full of shit or so jaded. And saying that when you're dead you won't be able to worry about being dead is missing the point so hard, I don't even know where to begin. Death is fucking terrifying, TC. Absolutely. In high school, I used to think about it a lot, but as life went on I've gotten busy enough with cool things that I don't have time to worry about it very often anymore.
