I disagree that race relations are worse in America.

Yes. White people were happier in the previous two decades not knowing there is a problem, but as has already been mentioned, non-white people have always dealt with the inescapable fall out of that problem. One side living in blissful ignorance white the other stews in silent resentment isn't 'objectively better.' The implicit power imbalance on display bares a lot of similarities to dysfunctional or abusive relationships plagued with major communication problems.

Talking earnestly about that problem without getting defensive still isn't something we can quite come to yet. But letting the conversation topic die so we can return to the illusion of cohesion from the eighties and nineties is the last thing non-white America should want, because when people in power are content there is nothing motivating them to change the status quo. I would argue race relations are better now than they were because we're no longer silently stewing in our dysfunction, but trying to directly address it, and negotiate something better.
