Gen y is pre modern internet. Millennials grew up with social media. MySpace was barely a thing when I was in high school. I went to college before Obamas changes to grants and was employed just as the recession was starting rather than as it was recovering. I wasn't getting participation trophies in youth sports and we kept score.
The rise of the internet, and the impact it had on your childhood, is a huge difference, and that is the point of being a millennial. If you used yahoo or ask jeeves as your primary search engine throughout school, you weren't a millennial.
Everything you're talking about is still applicable to people born as late as 91. I was born in 87 and transitioned from ask jeeves to google. We had myspace and bebo and msn messenger and SkiFree. ---
