Kirk was an explorer at heart, Picard was a legendarily skilled ambassador, Sisko was a tactician/strategist, and Janeway was a scientist. You have to watch their various shows with these points in mind to appreciate all four, though being a captain is also a jack of all trades situation and each had to have experience in all areas as well. But that's the best frame of reference for all four, imho.
