Voting for a third party sends the message that you disagree with both parties. They're obviously not going to win, but they can receive more funding once they hit a certain margin and it can signal to the two major parties what values people support.

Not voting at all just makes you look lazy and ignorant. Either side can just assume that you were going to vote for them but justs didn't want to go to the polling station. Hell, even doing a write-in joke vote is better than not voting.
