Joke isn't the right word, but it was sarcasm. Listen to the recording of it, he's clearly making fun of the media's narrative on police.
It was stupid and unprofessional but if you think he was being serious you need your sarcasm detector fixed.
So if I were a cop, and pulled someone over who was Latino, Muslim, or Asian and said,"don't worry, I only kill white folks" , i can use the same excuse?
If there was a massive media push that police were racist against whites and out for their blood and you had a minority being difficult and clearly sarcastically said "oh don't worry, we only kill white people right?" I'd say the same thing. That it was a stupid and unprofessional thing to say but you were clearly just being a sarcastic.
If that's what you want to tell yourself, then go right ahead. However we both know the outcome would be totally different.
I can't speak for other people, I'm sure a bunch of people would have a bitch fit over it, just like a bunch of people are having a bitch fit over this.
