IMO the Xbox One was kind of ahead of its time

It was only ahead of its time if we're on a timeline slated to become a dystopian future.

yea i can kind of see that, i think this is probably the worst gen for gaming ever

but lets be real here. we had people whining about used games, always being online, a focus on multimedia and not just games, etc.

now it's 2017 and when was the last time you went into a Gamestop and bought a used game (there's a reason they're closing a lot of stores)? most people seem to be downloading shit.

all the top video games are now either online-only (PUBG, MOBAs, Overwatch, Destiny, etc) or games where online play is overwhelmingly the most important part of the game (CoD, Battlefield, GTA Online, sports games, etc).

Multimedia is also huge now, much larger than in 2013 IMO. in 2013, Netflix's first big series, House of Cards, had just released its first season, and now 4 years later Netflix has greatly expanded its original content and is one of the leaders for TV shows and movies, same with Hulu, Amazon, HBO GO, etc.

my point being that for better or worse, the 2013 Xbox One seems to have pretty much predicted most of the major trends in gaming and media consumption but i think consumers were kind of deluding themselves about the direction things were going in.
