It actually kind of explains a lot of gender differences

Doesn't explain India, or why many non-tech science fields like math have way stronger female representation.

And still you're explaining only the what, not WHY women are so anti-snag. Is it the DNA?

Math has a female-dominated teaching job at the end of it. if you look at math PhDs, which actually require you to contribute new knowledge which means trying random things until something works (in math at least), those are primarily male even though women get more PhDs overall:

I found a video that addresses the India thing (29:33). The data they're referring to was from a study of 200,000 people in 53 countries in 6 continents, and across every single one men were more likely to be interested in thing-related jobs and women were more likely to be interested in people-related jobs. The gap was largest in the richest, freest countries.

At 24:00 they get into the "why." The higher your levels of prenatal testosterone, the more likely you are to be interested in people vs things, and the more difficulty you'll have empathizing with people, independently of sex.

If I had to guess why girls are more snag-resistant than boys it's because if you rewind 10,000 years it's a bad plan for women to waste calories doing dangerous stuff but not so much for men. Software engineering is kind of like going off into the wilderness while you're not sure what's out there.

The great thing is, though, that it implies a solution. We need to give kids more experience failing safely. If you get one bad test score in school that can hurt your grade forever. That benefits everyone, since mental toughness is a good attribute for anyone to have.
