It's better for him to lie and say he believes in God when he doesn't just to get presents?

Uh, yeah; it's a pretty harmless lie. It's not like he's lying by confessing he's a pedonecrophiliac. It's just letting his parents believe whatever they want, not causing a scene, and getting rewarded. The easiest thing you can do in life is; absolutely nothing. Not-ing is the laziest, most efficient way to avoid drama, ostracization, punishment... He doesn't even have to lie, he just has to not tell the truth.

It even works for quitting smoking.

Some people aren't wired that way. To some people, not saying what you believe in or who you are out of fear or wanting to avoid the reactions of others is living a lie. And they don't want to do that. And honestly they shouldn't have to. There's a big difference between just telling any and everyone that you're an atheist for no real reason versus telling someone in the appropriate context (like a parent when they want to know why you don't want to go to church or pray, etc.)

You'd rather avoid the conflict, which is cool but some people would rather not feel like they're hiding who they are. Neither approach is incorrect, and both are pretty easy to understand.

You look EXTREMELY immature when you announce that you're about to ignore someone. No one cares, including the person about to be ignored. Just FYI.
